Ohio University seeks applications from qualified individuals for the position of Chief of Ohio University Police Department.  Ohio University, a comprehensive state-assisted university classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral/Research University – Extensive, enrolls over 21,000 students on the Athens campus and 7,500 on five regional campuses.

The main campus is located in the scenic Appalachian Foothills 75 miles southeast of Columbus in Athens, a city of 20,000.  The University’s 41 residence halls house over 7,800 students.  Established in 1804, it is the oldest university in the Northwest Territory.  Though students are predominantly from Ohio, the University enrolls students from all 50 states and from more than 100 countries.

The Chief of Police reports to the Assistant Vice President for Safety and Risk Management and manages the Department of Campus Safety, a 2.6 million dollar operation employing 30 professional staff including police officers, lieutenants, communications officers, administrative support, and administrative management.  The Chief is responsible for all police functions, specialized service programs promoting campus safety, special event security planning, joint planning for critical incident response, and providing leadership in developing creative programs and approaches to meet the needs of the University community.  We seek a candidate with a commitment in working effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

The Chief position has the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education.  The accrediting organization must be recognized by the US Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
  • Ten years law enforcement experience in an agency of comparable size and complexity with five years of supervisory and management experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to and success implementing and sustaining a model of community policing
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and sustaining a cultural diverse work environment
  • Certification by Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy within one year of employment
  • Specialized training such as that offered by the FBI National Academy, Police Executive Leadership College, Certified Law Enforcement Executive, Northwestern University Command School, and/or the Southern Police Institute

The University is particularly interested in candidates with the following preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Direct experience supervising bargaining unit employees
  • Direct experience in college or university law enforcement
  • Direct experience in emergency planning, inter-agency cooperation and planning, and sound fiscal management

Candidates will undergo a background investigation, must possess a valid driver’s license, and may participate in physical, polygraph, psychological and/or other examinations at the University’s discretion.  This is a salaried administrative position; salary commensurate with experience.
