Minimum qualifications for this position are:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in police science, criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Or, an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training could satisfy the above qualifications.
  • Ohio Peace Officer Certification as issued by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council, or documents that would confirm eligibility to obtain approval as an Ohio Peace Officer from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council.
  • Possession of valid Ohio Driver’s License.
  • Individuals eligible for the testing must be at a sergeant’s level with one year of prior experience in a department substantially equivalent to the size of the City of Defiance.

The selection process has two separately administered components.  The first component is the IACP Written Examination to be administered to eligible applicants.  This examination will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 8:00 a.m.  The study material for the written exam is Police Resources: IACP Promotional Examination Preparation Manual. Those with the top twelve test scores who have passed the test with at least a 70% will be eligible to proceed to the second component which is the Assessment Center to be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 and possibly Sunday, November 6, 2016.  It will be conducted by consultants from the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police.  Scores from this component will be weighted 60%.  Both the written test and the assessment center will be held at Defiance City Hall at 631 Perry Street, Defiance, Ohio.

After combining the weighted scores from the two components, the top three candidates will be forwarded to the City Administrator for final consideration and recommendation.  Prior to appointment, the candidate must pass a comprehensive medical examination, drug and alcohol testing, psychological testing, and undergo a background investigation.
